MODEL 02 / ORGANISATION & FLOW

How teams fit the work

Move the capabilities. Keep the work. See what the boundaries change.

No baseline pinned
Six specialists; same headcount in every layout.

Drag a handle or use “Move to”. Every move replays the same work from day 0.

Lead time includes waiting and transfers, for finished work only. Unfinished work stays visible.

Saved memberships replay against the active workload and assumptions. Changing a workload updates every row; saved memberships stay intact.

Scroll the table sideways on a small screen. Names stay visible; lead time includes finished work only.

Where this workload asks for effort

Follow one piece of work

Within a team Across a boundary

The line on the map follows this route. Dashed connections cross a team boundary.

    Current Baseline

Challenge the assumptionsCoordination, handoffs & model limits

Six specialists, one capability each. Moving a card changes team membership, not headcount. Bigger teams lose more time to internal coordination; crossing a boundary adds delay and receiving effort.

Illustrative defaults: 5% per teammate, 0.75 days per crossing. Receiving effort defaults to 0.15 points per crossing.

    The mechanism

    Capability capacity = 1 − coordination loss × (team size − 1)

Every piece of work follows a fixed sequence. Each capability serves its oldest ready work first. Specialist capacity cannot be borrowed by another capability. A wider team may save transfers while slowing its busiest specialist.

The model advances in quarter-day steps. All capabilities work simultaneously before completed stages move on. Only team boundaries change between compared arrangements; their workload and assumptions are identical.

A thinking model, not staffing advice

Work, coefficients and examples are fictional. No learning, parallel stages, skill overlap, rework, priorities or managerial hierarchy. There is no cost to reorganising: a move replays an alternative history.
